Half-Size Racks for Half 19 Inch Equipment (9.5 Inches)

Equipment manufacturers are increasingly turning to compact half-19-inch-wide enclosures that are easy to transport as single systems for bands and small jobs, in part, of course, because digital equipment takes up less space. For 19-inch installation, there are enclosure adapters that can be used to bring two narrow units side by side to a standard 19-inch width. Alternatively, a narrow rack can be used as a professional solution for the installation of the devices. Half-size racks

No standard for half-19-inch equipment - no 9.5-inch standard

The issue: there is no standard for the half-width rack mount equpiment. Among users, the issue is mostly unknown and people refer to a 9.5-inch device as a matter of course. However, there is no 9.5 inch standard width. The 19 inch standard width is defined by the width of the front panel with 482.6 mm (= 19 inch) as well as the guidelines for the hole pattern for mounting on the rack strips. Behind the front panel, however, the width and depth of the unit housing may be designed as the manufacturer wishes. There, the widths usually vary between 400 and 445 mm. The half-width units are then half of the respective normal enclosure width. Fixing ears are attached to these on the right and left. As a result of this procedure, the half-19 inch units can differ in width.
If you research on the internet, you will come across half-19 inch front panel widths of 9.5 inches, 10 inches, 10.4 inches or 10.5 inches. The demo units from Shure in the picture have a width of 263 mm, which is about 10.4 inches.

The variable half-size rack solves this problem so that the user can be sure that his unit will fit into the case. Devices can be up to 280 mm wide, including the mounting brackets. For narrower units, the rack is infinitely adjustable. The user remains flexible with the rack and can easily change the brand of his next equipment purchase. Nevertheless, it is important to note that it is not possible to freely mix units from different manufacturers within a rack if they differ in width.
